Installing an Immersive New Ceramics Gallery
Marie-Laure Buku Pongo, Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts, invites us behind the scenes of the installation of the Frick’s new second-floor ceramics gallery. The room will showcase mostly pieces of eighteenth-century French faience-a major gift from the collection of Sidney R. Knafel-and will complement two other spaces within the museum’s renovated home, displaying gifts of Meissen porcelain from Henry H. Arnhold and Du Paquier porcelain from the Melinda and Paul Sullivan Collection. Taking inspiration from the porcelain room at Frick Madison and the private installation of the Knafel collection, the immersive and colorful new gallery will enable visitors to discover, or rediscover, an important group of the Frick’s decorative arts.

    Would UV film on the windows help? I assume you cannot replace the actual windows/glass as it would not be historic.

    • @red.aries1444
      @red.aries1444 17 днів тому

      I don't think the window panes are still the same from the time when the original Frick mansion was built. You need a much better protections against burglary and heat loss nowadays. The thicker window panes will already offer more protection against UV-light. But silk can disintegrate from other reasons too. Silk is often weighted to make it more stiff. And the materials used for this process can damage the fibers over the years.

    Let me ask you, when you put on your dress ir shoes, do you think of the slave labor in China making them? I doubt it. I doubt if anyone in the 13th century cared anymore than you do today where the gold came from, only that it was available for a reasonable price, just like your dress or shoes. I still like your presentation but get off your woke preaching. It's tiresome.

    I am a little confused. Are these great new facilities purely for decorative arts, sculpture, ceramics, etc.? They seem to conspicuously skip over the paintings that are the heart of the collection. Are those studied and conserved somewhere offsite? Or are there additional painting conservation studios? Thanks,

    • @frickcollection
      @frickcollection Місяць тому

      Thank you for your question! The new space featured in the video will be largely dedicated to in-house conservation of decorative arts and sculpture, while a new, separate conservation studio will treat books and works on paper. Many of the Frick's historic interiors and other types of artworks are treated in partnership with outside conservators. Notably, our paintings collection is cared for through a long-standing relationship with the Paintings Conservation Department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We invite you to check out past episodes of "Renovation Stories" to explore some of our partnership conservation projects!

    Those are herms. Caryatids have limbs. But perhaps they are modern herm statues of caryatids, since herms are traditionally male and caryatids are traditionally female.

    These are not caryatids. They are herms. Caryatids are full figures carved in the round used as a supporting column. A herm is only the head or torso of a figure atop a square section base. Usually free standing but can replace an engaged colonnette, as these sculptures were originally used. They do not function as a supporting architectural element.
